WHERE ROTARY BOAT SETS SAIL – 17.5.2019 / 16:00
A genuine steamer for the first time appeared in Prague in May 1841, when Joseph John Ruston and John Andrews tested the steam boat Bohemia on the Vltava. J.W. Pierce and J. Winter unsuccessfully attempted to open a steam shipping company in the city, in 1857. In 1865, the steamer Praha opened the Vltava’s first passenger line between Prague and Štěchovice. It was operated by the Prague Steam Shipping Company, led by František Dittrich, wo would later become the Mayor of Prague. The sinking of the steamer Franz Josef I in 1898 left four passengers dead in one of the tragic moments in the history of Prague’s boat transport. The business scored important successes in the late 19th century and in the 1940s. At present, several companies operate commercial boat services in Prague. Prague Transport Company also has a network of ferry boat services. Scheduled lines within Prague and connecting the city with other Vltava destinations ( (Mělník, Slapy) rank among tourist attractions, as do private boat leases for corporate purposes. A seat on board a Prague steamer will furnish you with original views of Prague historical sites on both banks of the river Vltava, enhanced by small refreshments served during one-hour or longer cruises. Prague’s Rotary clubs treat their visitors to the sensation and often hold get-togethers on board a cruise ship.
Dvořák Embankment and nearby places are part of the Prague Heritage Area, registered as a UNESCO-protected world heritage site.
