More about the Valdštejn Palace as the seat of the Senate of the Parliament
More about the history of the Valdštejn Palace
The main hall of the Valdštejn Palace was not chosen at random as the meeting place for overseas participants of the District Conference for the Inter Country Meetings. Several Senators of the Czech Senate, which is based in this Palace, met with several RI Presidents during their visits to our District (2005 : Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar; 2007: Dong Kurn (D.K.) Lee, 2016: K. R. „Ravi“ Ravindran). This year there will be a much larger gathering.
The Valdštejn Palace was renovated for the use of the Czech Senate in 1996-2000; it includes the Valdštejn Garden and the Valdštejn Riding School. This palace complex was built in the years 1623–1630 by one of the most powerful and richest nobleman of that time, Albrecht Václav Eusebius of Valdštejn in the place of the Trčkov Palace and 23 other houses, 3 large gardens and a brickworks. To build the Valdštejn Palace, he invited reknowned architects, builders, painters, sculptors and other artists and craftsmen. This previously rather insignificant and poor Czech nobleman through his marriages and purchases was able to gain a significant property portfolio and significant standing in the Emperor’s Court. In 1625, he became a General in the Emperor’s Army. 9 years later, however, he was classed as a traitor in the Emperor’s decrees and was killed by the Emperor’s officers in Cheb. His property in the Czech Lands were confiscated.
VALDŠTEJN PALACE is a significant part of the historic heart of Prague as it is listed in the List of World cultural and natural heritage sites UNESCO.
