History of the area Žluté Lázně
For a number of years now, the recreational area of Žluté Lázně, with the help of the Czech Dragonboat Association, has been the venue for the annual Rotary Dragonboat Charity Challenge, run by the Rotary Rotary Club Prague International since 2010 where other Prague Rotary Clubs and numerous companies and the public participate. Initially, the venue was on Střelecky Island, then on the Smíchov embankments. Now as part of the Dragonboat Festival, this Rotary fundraising event has become very popular and is well known. Each year, over 20 teams participate and the fundraising donations are distributed amongst three Foundations: Výbor dobré vůle (Goodwill Committee), Nadaci Naše díte (Our Children) a Nadaci Život 90 (Life 90).
The name Žluté Lázně (Golden Sands) given to a river swimming pool in Podolí, was created from a former raft anchorage and storage area in 1910. The colour name came from the fence paint. This recreational area had its hey day in the 1930’s and 1960’s. It was totally destroyed by the river flooding in 2002. In 2005, the renovated area was newly opened as a natural sports and relaxation centre with a variety of sports and dining opportunities open throughout the year.
